ASEAN and GCEL Convene Briefing Session towards enhancing ASEAN’s Digital Economic Integration.
ASEAN’s Secretary General Dato’ Paduka Lim Jock Hoi held a Digital Economy briefing session with GCEL and the Malaysia Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia on November 6, 2019.
The briefing session was attended by ASEAN’s Digital Economic Integration Team as well as MTDC’s Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Mamat and CEO Dato’ Norhalim Yunus.
The session focused on how the Digital Economy Platform can assist ASEAN’s SMEs to compete more effectively in the global economy by reducing excess trade and operations costs, ease access to finance and insurance services, and better connect with distant markets to increase trade.
The session highlighted several synergies of the Digital Economy Platform towards achieving major economic development objectives of the AEC Blueprint 2025, ASEAN ICT Masterplan 2020, and ASEAN Connectivity 2025.
The digitization of ASEAN and its trade partners through the Digital Economy Platform presents the opportunity for ASEAN to reduce its excess annual domestic and international trade costs by USD 464 billion, increase goods trade by USD 1.1 trillion, generate 1.2 trillion in new digital services and create nearly 57 million jobs.
